Strategies for building resilience in seniors

As a senior, you can benefit greatly from building resilience, as it helps you deal with the physical, emotional, and social changes that come with age. You can learn to be resilient by creating social support, fostering a positive outlook, and building positive memories. Additionally, you must learn how to control your thoughts and emotions. This will help you deal with difficult situations in a more positive way.  If you are looking for information on strategies for building resilience, here is a useful read. As one of the leading retirement homes in India, we have curated a list of useful insights to help seniors build resilience.  1. Stay positive: Resilience is closely linked with optimism. Hence, focusing on the positive things around you can help you keep an optimistic outlook towards the future even during challenging times. Being optimistic involves many aspects such as being aware of potential problems, choosing to focus on the good things in your life, and finding the right solutions. By being optimistic, you can stay away from depression or anxiety, which can make it hard for you to bounce back during difficult times.  One of the effective ways to stay optimistic during challenging times is to look for the silver lining. Look at what you can learn from the situation and how it will make you stronger in the future or think about how grateful you are for all that you have.  You can also hang positive quotes or affirmations in your living space to improve your mood and overall well-being. Some of the popular motivational quotes include:  “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” – Albert Einstein “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”- – Martin Luther King, Jr. “Pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it.” – Paulo Coelho “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller 2. Develop and maintain a strong social network: When you are feeling stressed, reaching out to empathetic people who understand what you are going through can be a great source of support. Maintaining strong relationships with family, friends, neighbours, and former colleagues is a great way to stay strong during difficult times. It is also important to build new relationships with compassionate and understanding people.  You can also join a support group where you can meet other people who can relate to your situation. These groups are often based on a specific issue, such as depression or anxiety, but some groups are open to everyone who needs help.  If you live in a retirement community, you can connect with others who are in a similar stage of life and may be facing similar challenges and opportunities.  3. Manage stress and learn to respond to challenging situations: Building stress management habits is a good way to stay resilient. You have to understand that there are situations which are beyond your control and you need to be flexible and focus on things that are within your control.  Also, you need to be proactive and decisive about your actions. In order to be resilient, you must take on challenges one step at a time. If you try to do too much all at once, it can become overwhelming and cause anxiety or depression. 4. Take care of your physical and mental well-being: It is important that you take care of your physical and mental health as you adjust to the new changes in your life. It may be tempting at times to neglect yourself, but do not give in. To combat stress and anxiety, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating well, exercising, and pursuing interests that are both stimulating and relaxing. Take enough rest and do not exert yourself.  Mindful journaling, yoga, and other spiritual practices such as prayer or meditation can also help you build connections and restore hope, allowing you to cope with traumatic experiences more easily. When you journal, meditate, or pray, think about the positive aspects of your life and recall the things you are grateful for.  Also, establish healthy boundaries with people who are negative and do not show empathy for others. You may also want to re-evaluate the amount of time you spend watching news and reading about politics on social media. Spending too much time consuming negative stories can change your outlook, making it difficult for you to maintain an optimistic attitude. Looking for retirement homes for NRIs in India? Overcoming negative self-talk: useful insights by one of the best senior citizen homes in Chennai

Negative self-talk is a harmful pattern of thinking that can have adverse effects on your mental health and overall well-being. When you engage in negative self-talk, you allow a critical inner voice to take over, leading to feelings of self-doubt, anxiety, and low self-esteem. It prevents you from reaching your full potential and stops you from taking a step towards positivity. It makes you feel like you will fail in any endeavour that you try. There are different types of negative self-talk. Some of them are:  Filtering: You magnify the negative aspects of a situation and filter out all the positive ones. Personalising: When you blame yourself for something bad that has happened. Catastrophising: You anticipate the worst beforehand. Blaming. You try to hold someone else responsible for something that happens to you. It is important to overcome negative self-talk to progress in life. You need to identify the patterns of negative self-talk and work on them. As one of the best retirement homes in Chennai, we share some of the useful insights on overcoming negative self-talk:  1. Become aware of negative self-talk: Understand the pattern of your negative self-talk. You need to analyse how it affects your behaviour and mood. When you hear that little voice in your head or begin to feel demotivated even before you start something, stop and think. Reflect on your thought process. Try to trace the source of your negative thoughts. Think about what is triggering those thoughts and why you feel that way about yourself. Acknowledge your feelings and write them down. This can help you process your emotions and address the problem in a constructive manner.  2. Challenge your negative thoughts: Writing down your thoughts can help you understand the source of your emotions and enable you to address them. If you experience obsessive thoughts, challenge them by analysing them logically. You may find that most of these thoughts stem from irrational beliefs or past experiences. Positive affirmations can be a useful tool to counteract negative self-talk. Focus on your strengths and acknowledge your accomplishments to promote positive thinking. However, changing your thought patterns takes time and practice, so be patient and persistent in your efforts. 3. Practise positive self-talk: Positive self-talk is an incredibly valuable tool for maintaining emotional and mental balance. It is a versatile technique that provides a way to shift your attention to the positive aspects of your life. Positive self-talk can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, while also boosting self-esteem.  To engage in positive self-talk, take a moment to focus on your positive qualities. Reflecting on your strengths and acknowledging the good within you can help you cultivate those qualities and foster their growth. You can practise positive self-talk right before bed. You can list down positive experiences you had during the day or things you are looking forward to the next day. You can also repeat positive affirmations or mantras to yourself. 4. Focus on the present moment: Negative self-talk can limit you inside a cycle of negative thoughts. You will often find it difficult to find a way out of it. This is when you need to shift perspectives. Think from a different point of view. Think what your loved one would have said in a similar situation. Remember their words of motivation and you can find courage to break the pattern of your negative thoughts. Talk to yourself the way you would speak to your loved one.  You can also practise mindfulness to cultivate positivity and bring a sense of fulfilment to your life. By focusing on the present moment and bringing awareness to your thoughts and emotions, you can reduce negative thoughts. You can also practise yoga, deep breathing, and meditation as they help you focus on the good things around you and be more appreciative of the positive things in your life. Millet recipes for seniors

Millets are nutritious and healthy. They require minimal water and have a long shelf life, making them ideal for storage. Millets are rich in starch and protein. They are an excellent option for a wholesome meal, particularly for seniors. As one of the best senior citizen homes in Karnataka, we share some of the healthy millet recipes for seniors. 1. Millet khichdi: Ingredients:  ½ cup foxtail millets ½ cup moong daal 1 cup vegetables of your choice ¼ cup methi leaves or spinach 1 diced tomato 1 teaspoon grated ginger Dry spices: ½ teaspoon cumin seeds, ¼ teaspoon red chilli powder, ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder, and ½ teaspoon garam masala Salt to taste Procedure  Wash and soak the foxtail millets for about an hour. This cooks the millets quickly. In a pressure cooker add ghee and let it heat. Add cumin seeds and let it splutter. Add ginger until it emits a nice aroma. Add veggies and tomatoes. Saute them for a few minutes. Add the spices and cook for a few minutes on low flame until the tomatoes are mushy. Add the soaked and drained millets and daal. Saute them for a while. Adjust the salt and add water. Cover the pressure cooker and cook for 2-3 whistles or until the millets are cooked to the right consistency. Once done, open the lid and give it a final mix. Add a little ghee on top and serve warm with pickle and papad. 2. Kodo millet roti:  Ingredients:  1 cup Kodo millet flour 1/2 tsp salt 1/2-1 cup lukewarm water Ghee/oil for cooking Procedure  In a mixing bowl, add Kodo millet flour and salt. Gradually add lukewarm water to the flour mixture and knead to form a soft and pliable dough. Divide the dough into equal portions and shape them into round balls. Using a rolling pin, flatten each ball into a thin circular disc, dusting it with flour if necessary to prevent sticking. Heat a tawa or non-stick pan over medium heat. Place the flattened roti on the tawa or pan and cook for about 30 seconds on each side. Add ghee or oil on top of the roti and cook for another 30 seconds on each side or until it turns golden brown. Remove from heat and serve hot with your favourite side dish. 3. Ragi wheat dosa: Ingredients:  1 cup ragi flour 1 cup wheat flour 2 cups buttermilk (adjust as per preferred consistency) Salt to taste Procedure  In a mixing bowl, add ragi flour and wheat flour. Add salt to it and mix well to make an even distribution. Gradually add buttermilk and stir continuously with a whisk to avoid lumps. Mix the batter evenly and consistently to incorporate air into the mixture. Cover and set aside for 6-8 hours or overnight to allow the batter to ferment. After fermentation, stir the batter well and adjust the consistency with water if necessary. Heat a flat non-stick tawa over medium-high heat. Once hot, pour a ladleful of batter on the tawa and spread it evenly in circular motion. Add oil from the sides so that the dosa cooks evenly on top and does not stick to the pan. Cook until the bottom turns golden brown and the top is cooked. Flip the dosa and cook the other side for another 30 seconds to 1 minute. Fold the dosa into half and take it off the heat. Serve hot with your favourite coconut chutney and sambar. 4. Mixed millet bhel puri: Ingredients:  1 cup pearl millets 1 cup ragi flakes 3 cups puffed rice 1/2 cup bhujia 2 tbsp chaat masala 3 tbsp black sesame seeds 2 chopped onions 2 chopped tomatoes 4 tablespoons lime juice 2 tablespoons chopped green chilies 3 tablespoons green chutney 2 tablespoons sweet tamarind chutney Chopped fresh coriander leaves Pomegranate seeds (optional) Procedure  In a mixing bowl, add pearl millets, ragi flakes, and puffed rice. Add salt and roasted peanuts to it. Add black sesame seeds, chaat masala, and bhujia mix. Give it a good mix. Then add chopped onions and mix again. Add green chutney and sweet tamarind chutney and mix everything well. Finally, add chopped tomatoes, lime juice, and chopped green chilies. Mix well and adjust salt if necessary. Garnish with bhujia, fresh coriander leaves, and pomegranate seeds (optional). Serve immediately and enjoy. Retired homes in Bangalore

After decades of working, retirement can bring a sense of loss or confusion about what to do next. By setting goals and finding a sense of purpose, you can enhance your retirement experience and maintain a sense of fulfilment and meaning in life. As one of the leading retirement homes in Bangalore, we share with you some useful insights on how you can set retirement goals and find purpose during retirement:   1. Find purpose: Retirement represents a significant life transition and discovering a sense of purpose during this period is important. Sources of purpose could include pursuing a passion, learning a new hobby, or engaging in community service. Also, having a sense of purpose in life is associated with overall well-being and longevity.    2. Determine your priorities: It is important to determine your personal values and priorities when planning for retirement. Make a list of activities that appeal to you and could give your life a new direction. This could include hobbies, volunteer work, travel, or even pursuing a new educational programme.    3. Set achievable goals: It is important to set goals that are realistic and achievable. The idea behind this is to avoid stress and enjoy your golden years to the fullest. You may wish to create goals related to your health, relationships, personal growth, or community involvement. By viewing these goals as stepping stones, you will feel a sense of happiness and achievement throughout your retirement.    4. Focus on your overall well-being: An all-encompassing retirement plan not only addresses your personal goals and community involvement but also takes into account different factors that contribute to your overall well-being, such as:  Physical well-being: Eating a balanced diet can help you stay healthy. In addition to eating well, staying active by participating in regular exercise, such as cycling or jogging, can also help you feel energised. Also, remain attentive to any unexpected changes in your body and seek prompt medical attention if necessary. Mental well-being: When you retire, it is necessary to keep your mind active and engaged. Research has shown that engaging in mentally-stimulating hobbies such as reading and playing chess has been linked to better cognitive function and a reduced risk of cognitive decline in old age. Social well-being: Strong relationships can help give you a sense of purpose and support. Joining social groups or hobby clubs can also help you build new connections. When you join a hobby class, whether it is photography or music, you find yourself around other like-minded people. Spiritual well-being: Spirituality can increase your sense of connection with the world, making you feel less isolated. Many seniors turn to religion or spiritual practices for comfort and guidance, especially during challenging times. In addition to praying and observing other religious practices, you can begin practising meditation. This involves focusing your mind on a particular object or thought in order to achieve a state of calmness or relaxation. Financial well-being: To enjoy your golden years to the fullest, you need financial resources to support your needs and desires. You can achieve your financial goals and minimise risk by investing in a varied range of financial schemes including bonds and mutual funds. If you are not well-versed in financial planning, you should seek the assistance of a financial advisor.   Retirement can be a time of great uncertainty and emotional upheaval. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of retirement, consider getting professional advice from a retirement coach or counsellor.   Looking for senior citizen apartments in Bangalore?      Are you looking for a senior living community in Bangalore that offers great amenities and exceptional services? Tips for sticking to your retirement budget

April 23, 2023

Categories : Retirement Planning Tips | Senior Living Tips

Creating a retirement budget is an effective way to manage your finances. However, staying committed to it can often be a difficult task. As one of the leading senior living communities in India, we share some useful tips to help you stick to your retirement budget.   1. Limit unnecessary expenses: Making a monthly budget is an excellent way to get a handle on your expenses and identify areas where you might be overspending. Look for areas where you can cut back and save money.  Here are some tips to curtail your unnecessary expenses: Cancel subscriptions for services you do not use. Switch to a less expensive phone plan. Spend less on dining outside. Downsize to one car to cut back on your transportation costs. Consider buying groceries in a planned way instead of impulse buying.   2. Surround yourself with people who respect your budget: In order to stick to your budget, you need to have supportive people around you. When you are trying to control your impulsive spending habits, they can be your support group. If you want to keep your spending in check, avoid hanging out with those who do not prioritise their finances. Being around people who make impulsive purchases can easily rub off on you, and you may end up buying unnecessary items as well. To build a sustainable and responsible spending habit, surround yourself with individuals who are sensible with their money. They will remind you to stick to your budget goals. They will not pressure, advise, or tempt you to buy things that you momentarily like.   3. Public accountability: Social media is a great place to share your goals, accomplishments, and seek support from like-minded people. There are different online groups where you can find people who are good at financial planning. When you find such a group, share your budget goals there. The group members can be of great support. Keep them updated about your progress as well as any setbacks you may encounter along the way. You can also create a blog where you can write about your experiences and get feedback from your readers. Maintain transparency with your followers and friends. Public accountability will compel you to stick to your goals. It is also a great way to form new meaningful relationships and form a community of like-minded people.   4. Visualisation board: Create a visualisation board. It is not important as to how you create or stack the pictures. However, you must ensure that the board represents why you want to stick to your budget. If your retirement plans include dreams of travelling the world, owning a dream car, or building up emergency savings, be sure to include representative images on your board. Ultimately, the visualisation board should serve as a reminder of your retirement budget and keep you inspired to achieve your financial goals.   5. Review your budget: It is important to review your retirement budget regularly because unexpected situations can alter both your financial situation and goals, and your budget may need to be adjusted accordingly. For instance, if you have to pay for unexpected healthcare costs or home repairs, you need to re-evaluate your sources of income such as pension and investment income and adjust your budget accordingly.   Looking for a senior living community in Bangalore?    Explore our premium retirement homes. At our retirement homes, we prioritise the comfort and luxury of our residents. Our homes are designed to provide seniors with a tranquil and secure environment, where they can relax and enjoy their golden years in a worry-free style. Useful insights on painting and drawing for seniors

April 22, 2023

Categories : Activities For Seniors Citizens | Retirement homes | Senior Living

Art is an excellent means of expression regardless of one’s age. However, it becomes even more advantageous for individuals as they age, as it boosts their emotional well-being and offers numerous health benefits. Seniors can benefit greatly from engaging in creative activities such as painting and drawing. As one of the leading senior living communities in India, we share with you some of the useful insights on painting and drawing:  Simple projects: Take up simple projects and start small. In case you are new to painting, it is likely that your painting instructor will teach you to start with simple pencil drawings such as shapes and figures. These do not require a lot of experience and involve drawing simple objects such as trees, fruits, and sceneries. Different mediums: You can discover your own creative potential by experimenting with different drawing and painting mediums such as acrylic and watercolours. This process can be enjoyable and rewarding, allowing you to express yourself creatively while developing new skills and techniques. Right tools: The right tools can make painting a much more enjoyable experience. Pencils are the most common tool for drawing. They come in different hardness levels, from 9H (hard) to 9B (soft). Charcoal is also a popular tool that can be used to create both light and dark lines. Erasers are also a must-have tool for artists – they are used for correcting mistakes and creating highlights. Choosing the right paper is also important for drawing – you can choose from different papers such as sketch paper, drawing paper, and watercolour paper. Classes or workshops: Attend different art classes and workshops hosted by eminent and popular artists in the city. They will help you gain knowledge on different techniques and brush strokes. Enjoy the process: Painting and drawing is a way of self-expression. When you create something based on your perception of perfection, it is unique and equally beautiful. Avoid thinking about achieving perfection. Art is about creation. Enjoy the journey of creation rather than stress about the final product.   Benefits of painting and drawing for seniors: Joining a painting class can provide you with an excellent opportunity to socialise and interact with like-minded individuals. Painting classes offer you a chance to communicate with other students and develop new relationships. Even shy and introverted seniors can benefit from painting workshops, as they can gain exposure and create meaningful connections with fellow art lovers. Painting can help you exercise and improve your fine motor skills. As you handle and use a brush correctly, while keeping your hands steady, you can improve your body coordination. Regular painting can also help prevent stiffness and inflammation, reducing pain from conditions such as arthritis and hypertension. Painting is a creative art form that lets you express yourself. When you pick up your brushes and start to colour, you are likely to experience feelings of pleasure, happiness, and satisfaction. Also, painting can have a meditative and calming effect, reducing stress and anxiety. It can also improve focus and enhance relaxation. How to keep book club meetings engaging and productive for seniors?

Book clubs are a great way for seniors to make new friends and share their love of reading with others. Many book clubs meet monthly and help seniors fight social isolation by providing them with companionship and intellectual stimulation. If you are hosting book club meetings for seniors and are looking for tips on how to keep the meetings engaging and productive, here is a useful read.   Decide the format of the meeting: Deciding the format of a book club meeting for seniors can depend on different factors, such as the size of the group, the interests of the seniors, and the availability of resources. Keep your book club’s schedule steady: Schedule the meetings for the same day and time each month. If a meeting is cancelled, reschedule it immediately rather than waiting until next month. Select the location: If your book club is in person, location plays an important role. If your senior members enjoy hosting at their homes, you can task everyone with bringing a snack or drink of choice so there is less burden on the host. You can also meet at local cafés or in your local library. Select the books: Book clubs take different approaches when choosing which books to read each month. Many book clubs have rotating leadership, where each member takes a turn selecting the next book to read. Another method for choosing the next book to read in a book club is to have each member suggest a few titles, followed by a ranking process where everyone votes for their top choices. This method ensures that all seniors are included in the selection process. Craft meaningful and thoughtful questions for discussions: To make your book club meetings more engaging and productive, it is important to have thought-provoking discussions. While it is okay to go with the flow, having a clear direction for the conversation can help ensure that seniors leave with a deeper understanding of the book. One way to start the discussion is by asking each member to rate the book. This allows everyone to share their initial thoughts and opinions before diving into a more in-depth conversation. While some books may have suggested discussion questions at the end, it is always a good idea to have additional questions prepared. These questions should be open-ended and encourage seniors to think critically about the book’s themes, characters, and plot. Having a variety of discussion questions can also keep the conversation lively and engaging. Consider asking questions about the book’s relevance to current events, how the story impacted each member personally, or even hypothetical scenarios based on the book’s plot. Themed snacks and decor: Theme-based snacks and decorations can add to the overall atmosphere of a book club meeting, making for a more memorable reading experience. Food and drink can provide a unique way to enhance the theme of an event. For example, if the seniors are reading a book set in Italy, serving Italian food makes them feel like they are visiting that country. Similarly, if the story is set in a certain time period, including foods and drinks popular during that era can add authenticity to the reading experience.   Many retirement communities have book clubs for seniors that offer an engaging and enriching experience for seniors. These book clubs provide a unique opportunity for seniors to socialise with like-minded individuals, explore new literature, and discuss a variety of topics in a relaxed and supportive environment.   Looking for senior living communities for NRIs that promote positive ageing?
