Common wellness workshops

Wellness workshops promote healthier lifestyles, improve mental well-being, and facilitate personal development. They help seniors gain knowledge on health topics and help them make informed health decisions. Wellness workshops also introduce seniors to stress-reducing practices and practical wellness skills, ensuring they can maintain or even improve their health as they age. As one of the best retirement communities in India, we share some of the insights into workshops that can promote overall well-being for seniors. 1. Yoga and meditation: Yoga and meditation workshops are popular in retirement communities due to their numerous health benefits. These workshops introduce residents to gentle stretching exercises and breathing techniques. Simple yoga postures help improve flexibility, balance, and strength. Similarly, meditation techniques promote relaxation, stress reduction, and mental clarity. 2. Stress management: Stress management workshops aim to provide seniors with effective strategies to cope with and reduce stress in their daily lives. These workshops typically include activities such as relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices. Seniors are taught practical skills to manage their emotions, cultivate a positive mindset, and to face challenges with resilience. Workshops may also focus on time management, setting boundaries, and prioritising self-care to prevent stress accumulation. Participating in such thoughtful workshops can help seniors gain valuable tools to navigate stress effectively, leading to an overall better retired life. 3. Hobby workshops: Retirement homes in India often hold workshops to help seniors find and enjoy new hobbies. Hobby workshops include painting and drawing classes where participants can explore their artistic side. With these workshops, seniors interested in painting can learn different techniques and express themselves creatively. Pottery and ceramics workshops are also held where seniors get hands-on experiences in creating unique pottery pieces. Dance and movement classes cater specifically to seniors, providing opportunities to learn different dance styles and stay active. Writing workshops encourage seniors to explore writing genres such as memoirs, poetry, and short stories. These activities foster creativity, personal growth, and social connections amongst residents. Participating in hobby classes and fun activities can also reduce the feelings of loneliness in seniors. It also promotes mental and physical well-being in the long term. 4. For defence personnel, retirement does not mean slowing down. Instead, they jump into new adventures, help in their communities, guide young people, and  find fulfilling and engaging activities. As one of the leading senior living homes for defence personnel, we share some of the insights into the activities retired defence individuals can pursue. 1. Hobbies: Retirement opens the door for retired defence personnel to revisit hobbies that might have taken a backseat during their service years. From painting and photography to gardening, crafting, and making music, these activities offer a refreshing way to express creativity and feel a sense of achievement. They can connect with community hobby circles, enrol in classes, or even think about transforming their hobbies into profitable ventures or side incomes. 2. Physical fitness: Staying in shape after hanging up the uniform is important for retired defence personnel. Their careers instilled in them the importance of a consistent fitness routine. Now, in their post-service life, they can keep their health in check by pursuing activities such as walking, running, biking, or embracing yoga. Joining local sports clubs or community teams for games such as football or cricket is another great way. 3. Entrepreneurship: Retired defence personnel often possess valuable skills in leadership, organisation, and management. Starting a small business or venturing into entrepreneurship allows them to utilise their expertise and build a new career path. This could involve opening a consultancy firm, offering security services, or establishing a coaching centre. Seniors can also explore opportunities in sectors such as logistics, supply chain management, or event planning. 4. Education and skill development: Retired defence personnel can enrol in courses or pursue higher education to acquire new skills or improve their existing knowledge. This could involve studying subjects related to their service experience, exploring new fields of interest, or gaining new qualifications. Also, continuous learning keeps their mind sharp. It stimulates cognitive functions and can be a preventive measure against age-related cognitive decline. 5. Writing and podcasts: Many retired defence personnel have unique stories and experiences to share. They can consider writing memoirs, articles, or books about their service life or expertise. They can also venture into starting podcasts or digital storytelling where they can narrate their experiences. Such mediums cater to the modern audience and make historical and strategic insights accessible to younger generations. 6. Factors that determine the cost of living in a retirement home

cost of living in a retirement home

As individuals approach their golden years, many contemplate the prospect of transitioning to a retirement home. However, the decision to move to a retirement home involves careful consideration, especially regarding its cost. The cost of living in a retirement home can vary significantly based on several key factors that determine the overall expenses involved. Understanding these factors is important for prospective residents and their families. Here we share some of the useful insights on the factors that determine the cost of living in a retirement home: 1. Location: The proximity of the retirement home to essential services and popular locations, such as airports, parks, malls, hospitals, and cultural attractions, can greatly impact the cost. Retirement homes situated in prime areas with higher living costs, such as major cities or upscale neighbourhoods, often come with a premium price tag. One of the primary reasons for the higher costs in these locations is the convenience and accessibility they offer. 1. Healthcare services: Retirement homes that offer on-site medical facilities or establish partnerships with healthcare providers are often associated with higher costs. The presence of on-site medical facilities or partnerships requires additional financial resources. Also, implementing preventive measures, such as regular health screenings, wellness programmes, and health education initiatives, incur costs for the retirement home. 1. Amenities and services: Leading retirement homes in India offer a comprehensive range of amenities and services to provide a fulfilling and comfortable living experience for their residents. These amenities and services may include well-stocked libraries where residents can enjoy reading books, newspapers, and magazines. Retirement homes have fitness centres or gymnasiums equipped with exercise equipment. They also offer exercise classes or fitness activities tailored to the needs of the seniors. Outdoor spaces such as well-maintained gardens, walking paths, or outdoor seating areas allow residents to relax, enjoy nature, and socialise. Housekeeping services are also offered to assist seniors with cleaning, laundry, and general maintenance tasks. Dining facilities are often available, where residents can enjoy nutritious meals prepared by trained chefs. Recreational and social activities are organised to promote socialisation and engagement, ranging from arts and crafts to group outings, guest lectures, movie nights, and game rooms. Retirement homes prioritise the safety and security of their residents, implementing measures such as 24X7 staff presence, security systems, and emergency response protocols. Many retirement homes also provide spaces for religious or spiritual activities. These amenities and services enhance the overall living experience and contribute to the well-being and satisfaction of residents. However, it is important to note that retirement homes that offer a comprehensive range of amenities and services often come with higher fees. The costs include factors such as staffing, maintenance of facilities and equipment, and the overall operation of the various amenities. 1. Quality and reputation of homes:: Retirement homes that have established a strong reputation for providing high-quality services, excellent care, and a vibrant living environment often have higher fees. This is because they have invested in maintaining and enhancing their standards, ensuring that residents receive the best possible care and enjoy a superior quality of retirement life. 1. Accommodation options: The size and layout of the accommodation space within a retirement home can impact the overall cost. Larger units typically come with higher costs due to the increased square footage and additional amenities they may offer, such as a separate living area or multiple bathrooms. The layout of the accommodation space is another factor influencing the cost. Retirement homes with well-designed layouts that optimise functionality, privacy, and accessibility may command higher fees. How to select senior-friendly furniture? Tips by Serene Amara by Columbia Pacific

August 29, 2023

senior-friendly furniture

When selecting furniture for seniors, careful consideration must be given to factors such as comfort, size requirements, and lifestyle. The ideal senior-friendly furniture should feature armrests, high seats, and low tables, ensuring seniors can navigate and use them comfortably. As one of the leading retirement homes in India, we share some of the useful insights about buying furniture that are perfect for seniors. 1. Ergonomic furniture: Ergonomically-designed furniture plays an important role in enhancing the comfort and well-being of seniors. For optimal support, seniors should buy chairs and beds that provide adequate support to the spine and back. This ensures comfortable resting without placing undue strain on the body. When selecting cushions, it is important to choose firm ones that offer stability while still providing sufficient comfort. Seniors should buy furniture that include adjustable features such as reclining backrests and adjustable footrests. These features help seniors customise their seating or resting positions. 2. Ease of accessibility and mobility: Seniors should select furniture that promotes easy access and movement. They can buy furniture pieces with appropriate heights, ideally around 18 to 20 inches. These furniture items help seniors sit and stand without excessive strain on their lower back and knees. However, it is important to note that the exact height requirements may vary depending on individual needs and preferences. So, it is recommended that seniors try out different options to find the most suitable height for their specific comfort and ease of use. 3. Safety is important: When buying furniture, seniors should look for features such as rounded edges or padded corners to minimise the risk of accidental injuries caused by sharp edges. Furniture with non-skid materials or rubberised feet helps prevent slips and falls. Also, the furniture should be sturdy and heavy enough to provide a stable sitting or lying experience. Seniors should check the frame of the furniture to ensure it is durable and can support their weight easily. 4. Easy-to-maintain furniture items: When it comes to selecting furniture, seniors should consider materials that are stain-resistant and easy to clean, such as leather or microfiber. These materials allow for quick and effortless removal of stains with just a simple wipe, reducing the need for extensive cleaning or specialised products. Seniors should also avoid furniture with intricate designs or excessive detailing, as they can accumulate dust and be challenging to clean thoroughly. 5. Storage solutions: Efficient storage solutions help seniors maintain organised and clutter-free living spaces. When choosing furniture, seniors should consider pieces that offer built-in storage options, such as box beds or coffee tables with drawers. These furniture choices allow seniors to conveniently store essential items such as books, medications, or remote controls within arm’s reach. Also, the stored items remain protected and free from dust, adding an additional advantage to the use of these storage spaces. Leading retirement homes in India prioritise layouts and designs that cater specifically to the needs of seniors. These communities understand the importance of creating living spaces that promote accessibility, safety, and comfort. Regular health screenings for seniors play an important role in detecting potential health issues, identifying risk factors, and initiating early interventions. As individuals age, their healthcare needs change, making these screenings even more significant. As one of the leading independent senior living facilities in India, we share a list of tests that should be included in health screenings for seniors: 1. Blood pressure measurement: As individuals age, they become more vulnerable to hypertension (high blood pressure), a condition that raises the likelihood of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications. Regular monitoring of blood pressure enables healthcare professionals to identify and effectively manage hypertension at an early stage, significantly reducing the risk of severe health complications. 2. Diabetes screening: Seniors are susceptible to developing diabetes due to age-related factors, sedentary lifestyles, and genetic predisposition. Regular screening plays an important role in timely detection, allowing for early intervention and effective management of the condition. Neglected or uncontrolled diabetes in seniors can lead to severe consequences, including an elevated risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, nerve damage, and other complications. 3. Liver function test: With age, the liver’s function may decline, making seniors more susceptible to liver diseases such as fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or liver cancer. Regular liver function tests help detect any abnormalities or changes in liver enzymes, indicating potential liver damage or dysfunction. Apart from this, seniors often have multiple comorbidities and may be taking medications that can affect liver function. Certain medications can cause liver toxicity or interact with the liver’s metabolic processes. Monitoring liver function allows healthcare professionals to assess the liver’s ability to metabolise medications and adjust dosages if necessary. 4. Kidney function test: A kidney function test reveals irregularities in kidney functions, including higher levels of creatinine or reduced Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). Seniors who have health conditions such as heart problems, high blood pressure, or diabetes are more likely to have kidney issues. Regular monitoring helps doctors act quickly to provide the necessary care. 5. Lipid panel: Lipid panel tests reveal the presence of excess triglycerides and bad cholesterol in the body. These tests are particularly important for seniors who are taking medication for cholesterol and heart conditions. By analysing the results of the lipid panel test, medical professionals can assess the effectiveness of the current drug and dosage. If necessary, they can make changes or adjust the medication dose to ensure optimal treatment outcomes for seniors. 6. Mammogram: Breast cancer is a common and potentially life-threatening disease for older women. Regular mammograms help in the early detection of breast cancer by identifying any abnormal changes or lesions in the breast tissue, even before they can be felt during a physical examination. 7. Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test: For seniors, regular PSA test is essential for early detection of prostate cancer. These tests measure the levels of PSA in the blood. Elevated PSA levels can signal the presence of prostate cancer or other prostate-related issues that may require additional evaluation. PSA testing also enables healthcare professionals to track changes in PSA levels over time, evaluate the advancement of existing conditions, and determine the most suitable course of action.
